Ways to Get Rid of Bad Smell in Your Fridge

A stinky fridge is not a good place to store food. People often look for ways to get rid of the problem as soon as possible. With a bit of effort and time, you can make your refrigerator smell fresh and clean. Before taking the first step to cleaning your fridge, always place your food correctly in the fridge and also avoid storing food in open containers, so that the smells don’t blend. Once the smells from different foods combine with the other, foul-smelling chemicals are produced.

One of the major causes of bad refrigerator odours is improper storage of food items. The fridge is made up of different compartments and each compartment has different temperatures that preserve the freshness, aroma and flavour of different kinds of food. So it is very essential to store food items in their respective compartments only.

To eliminate bad odours you also need to make sure that there is enough cold air circulating all over the refrigerator. Adequate airflow will help to preserve food items for longer period of time and to some extent it will solve the problem of bad odour.

Getting rid of bad odour in your refrigerator is not an impossible task, so, if you have a bad smell in your refrigerator, here are some easy tips to make it a history.

Clean the Fridge Completely – The first step to cleaning the fridge may sound discouraging and stressful, but it is very necessary. Before you start the clean-up, make sure you turn off the refrigerator and unplug it, after that, remove everything in the fridge, then go through each item and throw out anything that could be rotten or anything you know you won’t   eat for the next few days. Scrub all the shelves, take out the drawers, shelves, bins and any other removable parts. Wash and rinse all the parts before thoroughly drying them. Don’t forget to wipe as much of the walls and floor of the fridge as you can, even under the crisper drawer. Clean the drip tray; this is located beneath the refrigerator. Be careful because it likely contains dirty water. Remove the grill from beneath the doors and carefully pull it out and dump the contents.

Leave Odour Remover on the Shelves – To get rid of odours in the fridge after cleaning, spread a box of baking soda in a container and place it in the refrigerator. Keep the door closed until the smell disappears, then discard the baking soda. To try to counteract every day odours, keep an open box of baking soda in your fridge at all times. You can also mix half a cup of baking soda with a tablespoon of vanilla to tackle tougher smells.

Keep Fresh Foods Visible – Don’t keep fruits and vegetables away in a drawer if you are going to forget about them, keep them on the top shelf so that you can see them anytime you open the fridge. This way you will be more aware of when they are going bad and can eat them before they go to waste.

Use Airtight Containers – Don’t live bowls of leftovers open on the shelf. Store everything in airtight containers. This will not only help your leftovers stay edible for longer periods of time, but it will keep their odours from mingling and assaulting your nose when you open the fridge.

Label and Date Leftovers – When you have plenty leftover foods, make sure you label them with the name of the food and date; this can prevent you from opening each container to see which one is which. It will also enable you to know when your food was packed away so you will know if it is still good for consumption, or needs to go out with tomorrow’s trash.

I believe with the above tips, you can make your fridge smell nice and there will be no need to put your hand on your nose the next time you open your refrigerator.
