Melania
Trump (born Melanija Knavs; April
26, 1970; also known as Melania Knauss) is a Slovene-American former
model who is married to American businessman and President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump. Born
in Slovenia, she became a permanent resident of the
United States in 2001 and a citizen in 2006. She is to assume the role of First Lady of the United States on January 20, 2017.
A lot of questions have arisen
considering the fact that she was not originally, a citizen of the United
States. Who is she? How did she meet her husband, the president elect? How did
she get to this historic point? She kept a fairly low profile during the
Republican‘s election that her husband, Donald Trump emerged as the winner,
paving way for her to become the new First Lady of the United States of
America, come January 20, 2017.
The
world is likely to find out much more about Melania over the next four years.
But, for now, here are 10 interesting things to know about the potential First
Lady.
1. She will be the first First Lady, in nearly 200 years, who was born
in another country.
Melania Trump was born as Melanija Knavs in what, at the time, was
a part of Yugoslavia called Sevenica. Today, it is the country of Slovenia.
Sevenica at the time was under communist rule, and Melania's dad, Victor Knavs, was a registered communist. The first First Lady
to be foreign-born was Louisa Adams in 1825, according to USA
Today.
2. Melania came to the United States to pursue a career in
modelling.
Modelling had been Melania's aspiration at a young age, and she first
began her career at the age of 16; her career took off when photographer, Stane
Jerko, noticed her talent and did a photo shoot of her. Her modelling career
culminated in her entering the U.S. on an H-1B visa under the name Melania
Knauss, and eventually meeting the future president of the United States.
3. Melania met Donald Trump at a party in 1998.
The party was thrown by Paolo Zampolli who owned a modelling agency and
secured a contract for Melania. Melania caught Trump's eye, who immediately
began courting her and tried to get her phone number. According to UK Mirror,
she said, “if I give him my number, I am just one of the women he calls. I
wanted to see his intention. It tells you a lot from the man what kind of
number he gives you. He gave me all his numbers”. After a week she called him and they began
dating and eventually got married in 2005. One will be left wondering if she
married him for his money, but from the bond they share it seems their love is
very strong. As the old adage goes, “opposites attract”, and that certainly
seems to be the case with this odd couple.
4. Melania will be the first First Lady to have ever posed naked in
photo shoots.
What kind of First Lady will she be
considering the fact that she was once seen naked on a magazine? According
to USA Today, Melania has been in two nude photo shoots: once in the New
York Post in 1995, and another in 2000 for British GQ, where she was
"sprawled on a fur throw, wearing nothing but jeweled bracelets and a
handcuff."
5. Melania is a
dedicated mother
The 46 year old soon to be First Lady had a son with her husband Donald,
who is 70 years old. Apart from being a celebrity, as well as always looking
stunning, Melania is thought to be a dedicated mother to her 10 year old son,
Barron Donald. She once said that she is raising her son because this is the
age he needs a parent at home.
6. She's her own person
“I am
my own person”, she recently told CNN. She is always quick to tell her husband
when she disagrees with his language or policies. She said being her own person
is very important in their relationship.
7. She is a
reserved person
Donald Trump is an outspoken extrovert, always in the
public eye; he says whatever he feels like regardless of, if what he said will
affect him or people around him. His
wife, Melania, is far more reserved, rarely seen beside Donald on
stage.
8. She speaks
five languages
The coming First Lady speaks Slovenian, English,
French, Serbian and German. She could come in handy at White House functions
considering that she speaks about five languages. But her thick accent seems to
be a problem for her because this is the reason she makes few public
appearances.
9. Melania is Donald’s third wife
From
third wife to First Lady, isn’t that surprising? Before Melania, Donald was
married to two other women. His first wife was a Czechoslovakian named Ivana
Zelnickova, they got married in 1977 and the marriage ended in 1992. His second
wife was Marla Maples, a television personality and former beauty queen. It was
said that he met Melania while he was still with Marla. He divorced Marla to
date and marry Melania.
10. She has four step children
When
she married Donald Trump in 2005, she ended up with having four step children
from her husband’s previous marriages. Ivana and Trump had three children:
Ivanka, Eric and the eldest Donald Trump Jr. who at 38 is eight years younger
than Melania. While Marla only had a child named Tiffany Trump.
