BAD HABITS WE OFTEN OVERLOOK

Most of us are guilty of numerous bad habits which we tend to ignore; and these bad habits can destroy our beauty secrets. Sometimes, you exhibit some of those habits in public unknowingly. However, whether consciously or unconsciously, bad habits should be dealt with, before they destroy you. Here are some common bad habits we mostly tend to overlook. So, beware and break those habits now!

Pulling or playing with your hair; yes, we all get bored, or anxious, but don’t take it out on your hair. Continual pulling puts too much stress on strands that can’t support that kind of pressure. Avoid this, especially with the edges, which will bald a lot more quickly.

Biting your nails; while we are at it, let’s tackle another stress- related bad habit -nail biting. We don’t have to explain the disadvantages of chewing your nails down to nubs, right? And if that’s not enough to deter you, think about all the germs and bacteria you are also swallowing in the process.

Not removing makeup before bed; would you rather miss 5 minutes of sleep or get skin like gravel? I am sure you know the drill, right?

Not washing your face enough; this is more for the oily- skin sufferers. I know you have heard the one about how you should be washing your face every day. Sleeping in your make up is a recipe for clogged pores and lacklustre skin. You might think you are doing your face well by using a face cleansing wipe. But it turns out those face wipes aren’t helping your skin in any way. Instead, they are only removing a portion of the makeup and dirt, while it leaves behind potentially irritating residue. Why not take a few minutes to just wash your face in order to avoid breakout.  It will make a much bigger impact that sopping away the oil.

Too many manicure; frequent nail salon visit or at home manicure may be damaging for nails. The constant application of acrylic tips, gel manicure and nail polish removal weakens and strips fingernails. Try to space getting your nails done with nail- strengthening solution.

Biting of lips; most of us, of course, are guilty of this bad habit. We sometimes bite our lips unconsciously when anxiety and nervousness hits us.

Skipping Moisturizer; skin care is about more than just your face alone. If you constantly find areas of your body dry and ashy, your first instinct is to hold your body lotion responsible. But, you may also want to take a look at your body soap. Go for buys that boast hydration and moisture. When you are ready to hit the bed, a little night time beauty prep can feel like a big chore.

SINGING SONGS TO YOUR CHILDREN REMINDS THEM OF YOUR VOICE

Too much emphasis is put on reading, writing and numeracy but not enough on the benefits of singing. Singing lullabies to your child is a great way to bond. Whether you sing lullabies or pop songs, the sound of your voice will help her drift to sleep.

In the olden days, children did not usually go to sleep without the aid of lullaby which was like a sedative to them. But today we see children going to bed without any hope of seeing their parents’ before sleep comes calling. Parents work round the clock, forgetting their primary duties; there seems to be a huge gap between parents and their children today which has not in any way created good parent and child relationship. There is a love connection from parents to their children through singing.

HOW SINGING HELPS YOU AND YOUR CHILD

The sound of your voice has the magic power to soothe and calm your child right from the start.  She will recognize it from the conversations she overheard and the songs you sang to her when she was in your womb. When she is a newborn, the sound is familiar and will help calm and reassure her. As she grows, she will associate your singing with calm and sleep time. Children love singing because it mimics their own sounds. Have you ever noticed how melodic your baby’s babbling is? It doesn’t really matter what and how you sing, even the shopping list sounds great to your little one’s ears.

WHAT DO YOU SING TO YOUR CHILD?

Many mums like to begin with a lullaby because they are familiar. Why not ask your mum if she remembers what she sang to you? And don’t be discouraged if they are old fashioned.                                                                                                     To get started, get the lyrics to all your favorite lullabies and   remember how they are meant to go. You could sing songs they have shown interest in; something that arouses their emotions. It should be what makes them happy. There are books or CDs to guide you, good and educative children programs accompanied   with actions on TV to help do the magic. However, parents who are lovers of tradition can sing traditional songs to their children. It’s a way to also imbibe your tradition into them.

DO CHILDREN GROW OUT OF LULLABIES?

It is reassuring to know that something as simple as nursery rhymes and lullabies could make a big difference in children’s learning. Don’t stop singing once your child starts sleeping through the night, your toddler, pre-schooler or school child will still enjoy joining you for a sing-song. Remember, everyone loves the sound of a good music, and people react to music whether young or old. No one is too young or too old for any music that is pleasant to the ear. And the best music for a child is mum’s voice.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T KNOW ANY LULLABIES?

It doesn’t have to be a lullaby, if you really don’t know or like traditional songs, try something you do enjoy .It should also be appropriate to your child. Pop and Rock songs, no matter how inappropriate to get a baby to sleep, can sound soothing if you sing them gently. Your child, most times, will only listen to the tone of your voice and the ups and downs of the melody, not the lyrics. Don’t worry if you are not a good singer or a star, whatever notes you hit will sound beautiful to your little one. Children respond to live music more than they do to recorded music. They are particularly responsive when the music comes directly from their parents or caregivers.

GETTING THE RIGHT WEIGHT WITH THE RIGHT FOOD

Do you work-out daily to stay fit and in shape, yet your weight keeps increasing? Do you eat the right food and yet no good result? There are some common mistakes about nutrition that you need to know, which most people don’t take notice of, but they triple your weight without you knowing. Some are very easy to overlook.

About 70% of weight loss is diet and 30% exercise. Diets play a major role in losing weight than exercise. So you have to be very conscious of what goes into your mouth because you are what you eat.

Yellow Card for Diary Products:
A dairy product or milk product is food produced from the milk of mammals such as cheese, yogurt condensed milk, skimmed milk, ice cream, butter, dried milk. Dairy products are usually high energy-yielding food products. Some few things to minimize or cut out from our diet are dairy products including chicken and meat which rots in the stomach.

Drink Enough Water
Sometimes we confuse thirst for hunger, so you eat a bunch of things thinking your body is hungry meanwhile, it really is just thirsty. Try to drink more water throughout the day, it helps calm you and also keep you full.

Do Not Skip Meals

I know of a friend that developed ulcer by skipping meals trying to lose weight. The most common one is usually breakfast. The problem with skipping meals is that you end up really hungry and tired; you eat anything in sight which might contain more calories than if you had just followed your meal plan of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast sets the pace for your day and also helps you function better throughout the day.

Do No Set Goals That You Cannot Achieve

People set losing weight targets for themselves, but I think that’s not the best alternative. Forget your dream size; what you should do is to take it one at a time. After all, you did not gain all the weight in just one week. If you are fond of that soda which contains high calories, you can start by replacing it with water. This is also applicable to all other weight boaster you want to get rid of. Love yourself and enjoy how far you have come.
Pay Attention to Your Belly Signals

Most people feel hungry without knowing what to eat. I’m of the opinion that each time you are hungry there is a particular food your belly wants to take at that time. Sometimes you eat something and you are still not satisfied; it may be your body is craving something salty or different. Also our bodies are different therefore, what works for one person may not necessarily work for you, so do not be misled.

Drinking Your Calories
Maybe you are eating clean, but are you also drinking your calories from beverages? A can of coke can contain as many as 240 calories, which might not be much but when it becomes a regular part of your day, then it can add tons of calories and sugar to your body and wreck your progress.

SIMPLE STEPS TO SOFTER SKIN

Touching the soft skin of a lady is something that many men like the thought of because it is the softness that makes men love their ladies all that much more. And for the ladies we also like our men to have soft skin; even if we like a rugged look and rough, strong hands, there are still parts of a man that feels nice when it is tender and silky smooth. Soft skin is achievable by everyone with easy self care methods. You can use these methods on yourself and get your man to try them too so that he will notice the difference soft skin will bring to his life.

You’ll be happy to learn that having amazing skin does not mean you have to have plastic surgery or spend a ton of money on expensive products. One of the things you must do for soft skin is to get sun protection. If you are a smoker, you should stop immediately. Be sure to eat blueberries as well as other fruits that have vibrant colors and are full of antioxidants. For instance, deep red, green and yellow vegetables are perfect for you.

Avoid foods with a lot of salt and stay away from fries and chips, or foods that retain water because, when you are retaining fluids your cellulite can appear a lot worse than you originally imagined.

You can choose to go to a dermatologist and check to see exactly what your skin needs to keep it soft, fresh and glowing. Still, beware of the products you choose to use, because the selection of skincare should meet the needs of your skin to avoid irritation and allergies. But there are fundamental things to know about how to get soft skin that simply come in these eight easy steps:

1. Drink Plenty of Water:
This is the easiest thing to do. Your skin is also thirsty since it’s always exposed to different environmental elements including temperatures.

The major cause of dry skin is lack of water in the body because it lacks hydration which is needed by the skin in order to secrete moisture. Therefore, drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily does not only give you health benefits, but it also feeds the skin to help keep it soft and gentle.

2. Exercise Regularly:
Retaining a healthy and fit body is another way to get soft skin. Regular exercise does away with adverse energies in your body along with undesirable toxins that are excreted through the skin.

Sweating during your workout is great because it lets your pores function correctly and is a passageway for moisture. Excreting the wastes in your body through sweating allows your skin to bring out its natural glow.

3. Keeping Away from Direct Heat and Sunlight: Your skin needs protection from UV rays from the sun. These ultra violet (UV) rays destroy active skin cells because of heat. Plus, exposure to the sun’s UV rays causes dry skin as it dehydrates the nutrients the skin needs to keep it soft and moist.

4. Wear sun-block: Be sure to wear sun-block/sunscreen if you're going to step outside of your house. One of the reasons babies have such soft skin is that they haven't been exposed to the harmful effects of UV rays.

5. Exfoliate: Exfoliate once a week or once a fortnight if you have sensitive skin. It will remove dead skin cells, dirt and oil and will leave your skin baby soft! You can do this with an exfoliating puff, exfoliating shower gloves or with an exfoliating scrub (store bought or hand made).

6. Pat dry with a big fluffy towel: Don't rub or scrub - this damages your skin and also creates wrinkles later on in life.

7. Apply lotion, cream or body oil before you leave the bathroom: This is the best time to moisturize your skin because your pores are still open and your skin is still moist.

8. Put some moisturizer: Apply moisturizer on your legs, arms, any area in which you want to be softer, and put tights/pantyhose (for legs), gloves (for arms), and leave it on overnight (putting pantyhose over your body locks moisture in and leaves your skin soft and creamy!) and be prepared to take a shower the next morning!

Following these eight easy steps will naturally keep your skin smooth and soft. However, if you apply skincare creams and lotions, make sure they are free of harmful synthetic chemicals.

Just remember, you want to hold onto your soft, healthy and naturally beautiful skin. Read the product’s label and look for ingredients such as: Phytessence Wakame, known as the Japanese “beauty preserver” because, its natural and powerful antioxidants have the ability to keep your skin looking youthful.

Now it’s time to start practicing these basic steps on how to get soft skin and discovering the natural substances found in skin smoothing cream products. Continue examining safe, healthy and effective ingredients and find natural skincare which helps your skin remain naturally soft and glowing.

TIPS

Home-made Exfoliation: Wash face with warm water. Then, make this exfoliation serum: 2tbsp honey, 2tbsp brown sugar, and half a lemon into a small bowl/container, mix, and rub into skin for five minutes. For additional softness, wait an extra 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water, and patting dry.

1. For particularly rough dry areas such as feet, knees & elbows lather on some lotion or body oil before you go to bed, when you wake up they will feel a whole lot better.

2. Drink half your weight in ounces of water every day. For example, if you weigh 140 lbs, you should drink 70 ounces of water every day; this will keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

3. Take a daily multivitamin to help your skin fight off damage and wrinkles.

4. Gentle, pH balanced, soap free body wash is best for your skin; soap can be very drying & contains a lot of chemicals that can damage skin cells.

5. Add a handful of sugar (brown sugar works best) to your favorite lotion and mix. Rub it into your dry skin and then towel it off.

6. Try a milk & honey bath for a luxurious way to baby soft skin, run yourself a warm bath, add about half a litre of milk, about 3 tablespoons of honey (this is not enough to make you sticky) and break open a vitamin e capsule into the water.

7. Lemon juice mixed with honey and a little milk cream also leaves skin soft. After applying this lotion for 10 minutes, wash with cold water.

8. Sugar and olive oil mixed and rubbed gently onto skin leave you feeling soft.

9. Use Johnson's baby lotion: your skin will be pampered and on the way to feeling and looking baby soft. Use cocoa butter to help skin become renewed.

WHITE STAR APPLE AND ITS HEALTH BENEFITS (Agbaluma or Udara)

The white star apple is a dark yellowish fruit with semi- circular seeds, a popular seasonal fruit normally consumed with the flesh in the West Africa region. Botanically called chrysophyllum albidum, the fruit is mostly cultivated in the rural areas and is very common during the months of December to Aril. The fruit is mostly found in African countries like Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’ivorie, Uganda and Niger Republic. However, here in Nigeria the Yorubas and Igbos popularly refer to the white star apple as Agbaluma and Udara respectively. Africans pick this wonderful fruit on their way to the farm, during the era of our forefathers. Nowadays you get it from the market place, as it has become a source of income to the people mostly living in the rural areas.

During white star apple season, you will see both adult and children savoring the great taste of this indigenous fruit. Have you ever cared to know the health benefits of the white star apple? Anyway, in case you do not know, the fruit is highly nutritional and can help a lot in many ways. Below are some of the benefits of Agbaluma.

1. The bark of the tree, according to researchers, was used traditionally to treat yellow fever and malaria, while the leaf treated wounds, stomachache and diarrhea.

2. The Agbalumo/Udara is a natural remedy for toothache, constipation, sore throat and much more. Also in some parts of Nigeria, the seeds are used to treat virginal and skin infections.

4. When the Udara/Abalumo is consumed for its flesh, it can help lower blood sugar, control cholesterol, prevents and treats heart diseases.

5. The fruit is known to have anti-oxidant properties that help fight cancer and treat diabetes.

Foods that help Control Grey Hair

Recently, I noticed some few strands of grey hair on my head. The first thought that came to my mind was, “oh no…. I’m getting old.” Seeing grey hairs has always made me think that people are old or sort of. But there are other things that are associated with grey hair apart from being old. I have read that grey hair represents wisdom. It is a crown of splendour and it is gained only by living a godly life. If this is true, then having grey hair is a good thing and blessing especially when you have reached a certain age. But the other reason associated with premature grey hair could be stress and depression. This can make your hair turn its natural colour quickly, although the fact of life still remains that as we grow old, grey hair creeps in. For most people, it doesn’t happen until much later in life; but for others it can happen quite early.  For those who do not like having grey hair, well, scientists tell us that there are certain foods we can eat to help reduce or stop grey hair. Let’s check them out.

Leafy Greens

Go for dark leafy greens to get your essential B vitamins. Your scalp relies on Vitamin B-6 and Vitamin B-12 for the production of red blood cells which transport oxygen and nutrients. Hair colour is also all about hormones, and Vitamin B-2 is an important player in hormone production. You can find this in greens like cabbage, lettuce, Ugu, spinach and so on.

Chocolate

Copper is essential to the production of melanin, the source of hair colour. As such, copper deficiencies can cause hair to grey. To load up on copper, go for a sweet treat. Semi-sweet chocolate packs the power of copper; additional copper-rich foods include mushrooms.

Berries

Berries are delicious fruit but strawberries in particular, are a delicious way to get an extra boost of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps produce
collagen (found within hair follicles) and fight free radicals which have been linked with the aging process. Additional antioxidant vitamins include Vitamin A (think orange and yellow fruits) and Vitamin E (go for nuts and beans).

Almonds

If you need a boost of Vitamin E and copper, reach for almonds. They're an easy snack to combat the mid-meal munchies and a number of studies suggest that almond consumption can help lower bad cholesterol levels.

Beef Liver

Foods rich in zinc and copper will help to prevent grey hair. Beef livers are full of copper and zinc and these will help to prevent premature white hair. So, you can eat beef liver for saving your hair, if you are not a patient of heart diseases and high cholesterol.

The Black Soap (Sabulun-Solo): A Refreshing Treat for Healthy Skin

The Black soap, (Sabulun solo) is a traditional soap which has been in existence for ages. It is a traditional medicated soap mostly used by the many tribes in Nigeria including the Hausa, Yoruba, Nupe, Gbagi and others. This traditional soap is used against skin infection. It keeps the skin in a healthy condition. It also helps to cure or treat such ailments as rashes, pimples, eczema, acne and other skin diseases. Bathing with Sabulun-Solo could be interesting, but most people prefer the foreign soaps, perhaps because of the beautiful pictures of pretty girls on the pack of the soaps. But what most people fail to understand is that the traditional soap does more repair to our skin than the processed chemicals and foreign soaps. The Sabulun-Solo is also referred to as Black Soap; it is known to have skin nourishing benefits due to an abundance of antioxidants.  I know that when you start bathing with this traditional soap, your skin becomes softer and healthier than before. Some people add a little lime juice to the soap to tone their skins.

There are different varieties of this black soap.  Most black soaps are made with a blend of plantain skin, cocoa pod powder, tropical honey, and virgin coconut oil. Some people use the ashes of palm bunch and palm oil or palm kernel oil.  Some additional ingredients, depending on the makers of the soap, could be Shea butter or cocoa butter for extra moisturizing properties. (Though, some types of black soap are more potent than others and can dry the skin easily).

Sabulun-Solo is a versatile skincare product that offers multiple benefits to the skin, and the good part is that it is very cheap and affordable. It is mostly hand-crafted by village women in Nigeria who make the soap for themselves and to support their families economically. The black soap has been used for generations as a natural remedy for the treatment of skin problems.  The soap is actually dark brown in colour, and not exactly black as people think. It contains natural Vitamins A and E, iron and an all-natural cleanser.  For centuries, Ghanaians and Nigerians have used this black soap to help relieve and prevent skin problems.

How the soap benefits the skin

1. Protects against Aging: Antioxidants in black soap protect the skin from free radicals damage which is a major cause of premature skin aging, wrinkles and facial lines.

2. Tones the skin: The soap helps firm up the muscles, tones and improves the texture for a more supple and glowing skin.

3. Fades Discoloration: It helps even out and fades brown spots and discolorations. People who suffer from skin discolouration can use this amazing soap to even out their complexion.

4. Reduces Skin Irritations: It helps reduce inflammation and skin irritations. It is soothing on dry and irritated skin; relieves rashes and removes red and dark patches.

5. Helps to Heal Skin Diseases: It is effective in the treatment of skin conditions like acne, eczema, blackheads and ringworms.

6. Serves as a Deep Cleanser: The soap has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and is great for deep pore cleansing.  It is also effective at removing makeup because of the oils and butters. contained in it. It also contains a high amount of glycerine, which absorbs moisture from the air and literally deposits it into the skin, making the skin soft and supple.

7. It's an Effective Exfoliator: The ashes contained in black soap provide exfoliating properties to remove dead skin cells and thereby improve fine lines, soften and rejuvenate rough skin.
I suggest that sabulun solo is a very good remedy for any type of skin problem that most young people have today. Therefore, it is advisable to go for a more traditional soap that contains no artificial or skin damaging chemical for a more beautiful, softer and glowing skin, than those sold at big super markets which in most cases destroy our skin.

FOUR STEPS TO PERFECT EYEBROWS USING EYE PENCIL

Polished and well defined brows always make the face pop. It’s however surprising how ladies find achieving the perfect brows a hard task. Eyebrows don’t necessarily have to be drawn or extremely funny. To know when eyebrows are done right they should be defined, clean and very natural because a perfectly filled, natural looking eyebrows is the secret to a nice makeup looks.

However, many Nigerian and black African women overlook their eyebrows and wonder why the expensive makeup didn’t help them look as pretty as the photos they see on the pages of celebrity magazines and catalogues. Funny, overly defined, concealer-caked eyebrows are not necessarily the point of a flawless eyebrow; you can define your brows with eye pencils, brow gel/pomade and so on to achieve flawless eyebrows that stay in place for hours. Even if you have scanty brows or mistakenly shaved everything off, these steps can make your eyebrows look clean and natural.

1. Define and create the eyebrow shape you want: Trace the line under eyebrows along the arch to define both sides of the brows (over and under).

2. Gently fill in the line with brow powder in the line closest to the brows.

3. Clean out underneath the brows with concealer, carefully blending into the skin so it doesn’t just sit on the skin.

4. Blend, blend, and blend to get flawless eyebrows that can stay in place for hours.
