Nigerian power lifter Alice Oluwafemiayo breaks World Record in Mexico


The World Para Powerlifting Championships might just be two days old but that has not stopped the Nigerian delegate, Alice Oluwafemiayo, from putting Nigeria on the world map. Oluwafemiayo provoked excitement and emotions as she broke the women’s 86kg world record in the 2017 Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico, while Mexican Jose de Jesus Castillo Castillo won a thrilling gold in front of the home crowd in the men's up  107kg. Oluwafemiayo won after clearing the bar at 140kg before lifting 145kg in her fourth attempt to break the world record of 144kg that fellow Nigerian Loveline Obiji set back in 2014. While reacting to her victory, Oluwafemiayo said: “I feel very happy, it was not something I was expecting,”

Lionel Messi tribute statue destroyed once again by vandals
A statue in tribute to Lionel Messi on Paseo de la Gloria in Argentina has once again been vandalized after it was previously targeted in January. This is the second time that the statue in Buenos Aires has been vandalized this year; the first time seeing the statue cut in half. However this time the legs were cut, leaving the body of the statue across the pavement on Costanera Sur. In January 2017, the sculpture was destroyed a few months after it was placed in its current location. The statue was part of a series of sculptures of Argentina's sporting heroes on the Paseo de la Gloria along the banks of the Rio de la Plata. Alongside the image of Messi stands other greats such as tennis stars Gabriela Sabatini and Guillermo Vilas, NBA basketball sensation Manu Ginobili and motorsport hero Juan Manuel Fangio. Police have said they do not understand the motive for the destruction and no one has yet been found responsible for the actions.

FIFA announces plan to create new club tournament in 2021
Part of the beauty of football is that it always evolves with new ideas and with the huge money being pumped into it, football is becoming even bigger. The major governing bodies like FIFA and UEFA are always looking for ways to advance their major tournaments, most notably the World Cup and the Champions League. They are undoubtedly the most competitive on the footballing calendar, with audiences drawn to over the billion marks. Football's main governing body have announced the creation of the Super Club World Cup, with the first tournament set to take place in 2021 and will run every four years. This means that Germany will be the last ever champions of the international showpiece, they won the last edition of the Confederations Cup in Russia 2017. There will be 12 teams from Europe, five from South America, two from Africa, two from Asia, two from North America and one from Australia.

Messi’s brother could be jailed if convicted of illegal possession of firearm
Matias Messi, the older brother of Lionel was arrested for possession of a firearm after a loaded pistol was found in a boat he was in following the mystery incident. The 35-year-old has now been warned that he could he jailed for eight and a half years if convicted of illegal possession of a firearm. He was arrested in hospital on Friday, December 1 after police said they had discovered a gun in a boat Matias is claiming he abandoned following an accident the day before. Doctors treated him for injuries which included a broken jaw and facial cuts but a judge decided the 35-year-old should be remanded in prison once he is well enough to leave hospital, although there is a possibility he may be allowed to continue his recovery at home. The minimum prison sentence Matias could face for illegal firearms conviction is three and a half years although his lawyer Ignacio Carbone suggests the gun found on the boat could have been planted by the cops. He remained under police guard over the weekend at the Sanatorio Parque - a private hospital in their native city of Rosario in Argentina. Matias was arrested 24 hours after being found drifting in a motorboat on the Parana River near Rosario just before dawn on Thursday morning and helped ashore. Last year Matias was instructed to teach football as part of a probation order after being caught with a gun in his car, and in October 2015, he was accused of illegal possession of a weapon after police discovered an unlicensed .22 pistol in his Audi A5. In October 2008 he was arrested for allegedly having a loaded gun in his belt as he survived an assassination attempt in April 2011.
