IS IT FUN TO DATE A CO-WORKER?

Office romances are becoming common, but the question is, is it the best? In all relationships, it can be sweet when you meet someone you fall in love with. And here you are in love with your co worker. This person is always there when you want to see him or her, you go out every day and you see him or her at will. You are always together, there are sexual glances, the playful jokes, you go out for lunch together and you have someone to confide in. Hmmm, how sweet it can be? However, does going out with your colleague full of sweetness or could there be any consequences? Well, I don’t want to use my own idea to tell if there is any consequences or not, I will prefer we share different people’s view on this. There we go:

DANLADI ANDREW (A CIVIL SERVANT)

Dating a co worker can be sweet, though, it can also be sour. It all depends on whether the relationship works out or not. Being in the same office gives you the opportunity to study this person closely. You get to know her very well in case the relationship leads into marriage. I am not against dating a co worker because you can meet your future partner at your place of work. What matter is that you should know whether your colleague is your kind of person before going into the relationship, because if such relationship does not work out, then you are in serious trouble. Though, every relationship has its own ups and downs, the bad thing here is that once it doesn’t work out co- workers will gossip about you. And also, your working place will not be a comfortable atmosphere for you, especially if the break up is not coming from you. That is why one should think well before going out with a colleague. It is only fun if it works out.

 RASHEEDAT (AN ENGINEER)

I won’t advice such; I am completely against it. Firstly, I can’t jeopardize my work.  What will the company think when they know about the romantic relationship? Besides, it sounds awkward to me. Going out with a co-worker is like being in a relationship with my neighbour. There won’t be any privacy. Even when you are not together, you can see what is going on with the neighbor you are dating. You know when he is home; you know when he is passing by because you already recognize his voice. You notice things that you will normally not have noticed if you were dating someone who is not a neighbour. This too much of closeness and lack of privacy (going out with a colleague), will make me uncomfortable. So, I can’t do it.

ISAAC (A WORKER)

Wow, on my part, I won’t like to date my colleague. This is the person I see every day and we do things together. Dating a colleague means when we are in the office, we won’t be doing things officially. Rather, relationship will creep in and we will always lose focus in the office. I would rather date someone who is outside my office or someone working closer to my office, but with a different company, not someone who is my co-worker.

DAMILOLA ABDUL SALAM

It is not ideal. I am not saying one shouldn’t date his or her colleague, but one should be mindful of what one is getting into. There’s the possibility that the relationship will work out, but you have more to lose if it doesn’t. When things go sour, avoiding the other person will be difficult and this will create an awkward working situation for both of you.

There is no big deal dating one’s colleague once there is sincerity in the relationship. It is even interesting because when you see someone you are dating always, it consolidates the relationship. However, there are some negative aspects in dating one’s colleague. You might not like the way other people address your partner in the office. You might have the same boss with this colleague and sometimes the boss will yell at your partner which might not go well with you. And this might affect the relationship between you and your boss, whereas your boss might just be doing his own duty as the boss. Also, sometimes you might mix up personal relationship and serious business. For instance, your partner has just offended you in the office, you will be in the office wearing a long face and you might pick on everybody in the office because he or she has done something wrong and that will affect your input as a worker.
