TOZALI MOST PERFORMING PET PROJECT AWARD NOMINEE – SALAMATU TANKO AL-MAKURA
Pet ‘’Projectism’’ has come to define the office of every
state first lady. Tozali looks at the relevance of the various first ladies to
the plight of the masses. Are the pet projects tailored to poverty alleviation?
How have these pet projects been able to combat unemployment among women and
the youths? How have these pet project cared for the sick, the elderly and the
weak in the society?
Nasarawa State First Lady, Her Excellency
Hajiya Salamau Tanko Al-Makura, has always changed the living standard of the
poor by rendering an unquantifiable service to the less privileged. Her exalted
pet project, Mother and Child Care Enhancement Foundation (MCCEF), among many
others, has set the pace for others to follow. She eradicated a paradox of
poverty in the midst of plenty and scarcity in the midst of abundance in
Nasarawa State. She provides soft loans and equipment for trained and trainee
women and youths with specific emphasis on the physically challenged and those
from poor backgrounds. She brought under control malaria scourge, malnutrition,
disease and squalor. She launched massive campaign against HIV/AIDS
accessibility to quality health care to pregnant women. She encouraged and supported
immunisation exercises support to orphans and vulnerable children. She
empowered women to be self-reliant and economically independent to fend for themselves
and support their families alongside the men. She provides sex education and
increases school enrolment, plus retention of girls in schools. She also provides
a special mouth-watering scholarship package for gifted children to encourage
pursuit of further education anywhere in the world. She helped in training 850
students in various vocational disciplines, including fashion design, interior
decoration, computer literacy skills, bead making, cloth dying, soap making,
hand and traveling bags, home management, environmental sanitation and hospitality.
She has a dedicated commitment to the etiquettes of good governance, aggressive
approach to the demands of her people and a passionate desire for improving the
welfare of all.
