Lemon juice, egg whites and milk are daily use items available in your kitchen. These items can also be used to tone your skin naturally and remove dark patches while brightening your skin to a healthy complexion.

LEMON JUICE: Everyone is aware that lemon is packed with citric and ascorbic acids which are excellent sources of vitamin C. Both have skin toning properties also. To tone your skin with lemon, cut a lemon into two halves and buff it gently onto your face and neck. Rinse your face after 10-15 minutes. Do it regularly and see your skin glowing up day by day. You can also mix small quantity of lemon juice with a bit of yoghurt. Apply it once a day. It works as well as any good toner.

Another way is to mix one teaspoon of lemon juice with one teaspoon of honey; the soothing properties of honey and the acidic properties of lemon make for effective skin toning solution. Gently massage and leave on your skin for 15-20 minutes, and then wash off.

EGG WHITES: Mix equal parts of lemon juice and egg whites. Heat the mixture in a small pan over low heat till the mixture thickens. Cool it in a small jar and keep it in your refrigerator. Apply this mixture onto your face and neck and leave for 15-20 minutes; then rinse off and see your skin brightening day by day. This also works well to remove a sun tan.

MILK: When you apply it topically, the lactic acid in milk works to gradually diminish the skin pigmentation leading to brighter complexion. For milk to be effective in skin tone, you need to soak one slice of lemon in one and half cup of whole milk for about 15 minutes. Rub the milk onto your skin and leave it overnight. Wash your skin thoroughly in the morning to give it a good look. However, it is preferable you use goat’s or cow’s milk.

Even better is butter milk, as it has extra benefit to make your skin supple and smooth. Another method is to soak a soft cloth in the milk, wring out the milk so that the cloth is not dripping. Buff the milk unto your face and neck with the cloth. Keep refreshing the cloth with the milk when it dries out. Rinse it off after 15-20 minutes. However, it is better to apply at night and leave it on your skin overnight. You will start noticing that your skin is brightening up after a few weeks.

Follow the above skin toning tips and watch your skin brighten and glow naturally.

HOW TO SIT LIKE A LADY

Sitting like a lady is most relevant when wearing a dress or skirt. One can always practice sitting like a lady in any setting and in any type of outfit, formal or casual. It is really up to the classy lady to decide the look and style of her presence, and therefore each female will approach this subject differently.

To most ladies, sitting like a lady indicates that the woman is classy and would like to be treated as such. To some, their commanding presence will not go unnoticed. To others, it prevents unsightly and unplanned views of undergarments and also it affects the behavior and mood of the individual in a positive manner.

There are typically 3 ways women most often sit. The first is an ankle cross with your knees turned to the left and your ankles to your right (unless you are speaking with someone – then your knees would face their direction). It is the most lady-like, but requires more delicate inner thigh muscle

development, which is not taught or valued in today’s society.

The second and most commonly used technique of sitting like a lady is the leg cross, which is one knee placed on top of the other. It encourages bad posture and could potentially result in the formation of spider veins, but it requires less muscle control and has been adopted by many as the standard way to sit like a lady.

The third way a woman might sit is not ladylike at all, and is instead a more manly type of posture. It involves either resting the leg on the other knee or sitting with legs wide open. Neither is becoming or classy, and should be avoided at all cost if wearing a dress or skirt of any length.

Never sit with your knees and feet side by side, with your arms hanging over the back of your chair, or with a scowl on your face. Being a classy lady is exciting, respectful and a mature choice in today’s society. Your poise and confidence will shine through your seated posture, allowing others to acknowledge your classy nature before you utter a word.

What you don’t know about the Tamarind
(Tsamiya)

Tamarind, known as Tsamiya in the North is one of the widely used spices mostly found in Nigeria, especially in a Northern woman’s kitchen. It is surprising to know that it also grows outside the shores of Nigeria like Asia and Mexico. For the benefit of those who have no idea what tamarind is, it is a fruit that has a sweet and tangy/sour taste; the tree that bears the fruit is very long and large with equally long, heavily falling/drooping branches. The tamarind tree bears fruit pods that are curved in shape, and each pod has a hard shell encasing deep brown soft pulp enveloping hard dark brown seeds.

The texture of tamarind is very sticky and paste-like, and the colour of the fruit is dark brown. It will interest you to know that this fruit contains some healthy chemical compounds such as minerals, vitamins, fibre and so on. It also contains tamaric acid which gives that sour taste to food besides its inherent activity as a powerful antioxidant. This thus, helps the human body protect against harmful free radicals. The tamarind is rich in vital vitamins like vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin C, and many more. Much of these vitamins, as many of us know, play vital roles as antioxidants, as well as co- factor function for enzyme metabolism inside our body.

As a homebred girl, I know what tamarind (pulp) is and a whole lot of things you can use it to make. One of those things is Kunun Tsamiya. Lol! Usually, a small portion of the pulp is soaked in half cup of warm water for about 10 minutes. Then you swirl the pulp with a spoon so that it is dissolved evenly in water to prepare a thin sauce. Strain the juice through a filter or thin cloth sieve before using in your Kunun Tsamiya, Kunun Geda or whatever you want to use it for.

The juice made of tamarind pulp can be turned into a refreshing drink with addition of a little sugar or honey. It is a refreshing drink you can make at home. If you want to use the tamarind in your cooking, just scoop the tamarind paste and add straight to your recipe. It’s as simple as that. Although, you should know that the thickness and strength of the tamarind paste varies depending on which brand you use. The tamarind fruit is a very healthy and good fruit I recommend for everyone. Next time you drop by the local market, get some of the fruit for a healthy you.

                                          FOUR WAYS TO COOK HEALTHIER

Cooking is something done on a regular basis, it is a routine done in the home, restaurants, and other places where people go to eat. As much as cooking is important, it is also necessary that people who cook regularly ensure they cook for the benefit of good health as well as those who consume.Whether you cook for your family, or for the public, do everything possible to cook healthy as healthy cooking is good cooking. Think health, think wealth, cook healthy and eat healthy.  Always remember that healthy eating is smart eating.

        Here are some simple tricks on how to cook healthy;

Use red palm oil

Palm tree is a tree whose fruit and seeds yield oil. Palm oil is mostly found in the eastern part of Nigeria, it is very common, and women from this part engage mainly in the processing of palm oil as a form of occupation. Palm oil is a healthy and natural oil used for cooking. Palm oil has been tested and trusted, you cannot get a bad meal from cooking with palm oil. It is better to cook with palm oil. Whenever you want to have a natural and healthy meal, use red palm oil for your tasty meal(avoid bleaching in order to retain its natural nutrient.

Choose unpolished grains such as Ofada Rice

Ofada rice is also known as brown rice; it is local Nigerian unpolished rice which is short, robust and mostly planted in Ogun state and also somewhere in the southeastern part of the country. It has about twice the fiber content of the regular white rice. It is better to pick completely unrefined grains over refined ones. The unpolished rice has lots more fiber, Vitamin B, zinc and other essential nutrients.  Unrefined grains generally have more nutrients and are a lot healthier than the refined and polished grains. They can also be more expensive than the refined ones. However, it is better to go for nutrient rather than quantity.

Cut down on the meat
We are a meat-loving nation, but just a little less in your pan will do you a lot of
good. Although meat is a source of protein, it also contains saturated fats.
Instead, opt for lean meat, poultry and fish, and complement with whole grains
and lots of vegetables.

Watch out for salt
Even if you do not have high blood pressure, it's still important to watch your sodium intake. The recommended amount of salt for an adult is about 1 teaspoon a day or a bit less, if you are a super savvy healthy cook

 Handbags: A Girl’s Best Friend

Handbags are usually used by the female folks and are made from different materials, ranging from animal skin, leather and cotton to other fabrics. Handbags come in different shapes, sizes, texture and colours, and this makes them even more desirable and beautiful. Handbags usually come with straps so that they can be hung on the shoulders; it could be the right or left shoulder and sometimes it could be clutched on the wrist depending on how one feels comfortable with it. It is like a friend that goes everywhere and most women (if not all) feel incomplete without their handbags.

This adorable piece of accessory carries sentimental value for women, and women spend hours and some hundreds of naira to get the ideal bag. Handbags are symbols of a woman’s taste first, before they are considered to be accessories meant to complement and match an outfit. When you look around, you hardly find a woman without a handbag, and in every occasion, handbags seem to be the company a woman carries along. In most ceremonies in our society today, women carry different colours and types of handbags to match with what they wear.

They are beautiful and practical accessories that are highly desired. Women can carry a lot of items in them; from mobile phones, to change of clothes, sun glasses, notebooks, diary, snacks, umbrella and practically anything that can fit into them. For married women with kids, a handbag can be used to store diapers or even milk bottles. This makes carrying handbag highly important for a woman.

Nowadays, ladies use big handbags popularly known as “I may spend the night” or “I fit no come back”. The handbag serves different purposes as some ladies put their daily wears inside the bag for emergency reasons which may warrant them to change their clothes. As for female students, they use the bag as a place for keeping their lecture notes and most times the cosmetics are contained in the handbag which they use to retouch their make-ups.

As the world is changing fashion is also changing, the female folks now use a bag called the “Clutch bag”. The bag comes in different colours, shapes and texture; it is normally small or medium in size. The handle is made of chain which makes it different from the other normal handbags that come with leather straps.

The bag is used for occasions such as night outings, dinner parties and weddings. But some ladies prefer to use the bag for lecture and other activities. The clutch handbag doesn’t contain as much items as the “I may spend the night handbag” (big bags). The clutch handbag does contain things like small exercise books for students, cosmetics such as small size powder boxes, lip gloss, etc. However, clothes which are meant for other activities cannot be carried in the clutch bag because of its small size.

The female folks are so attached to their bags that when the bag is taken away from them, they feel incomplete. Some feel rather unfashionable without holding a bag on their shoulders, and they feel as if something has been removed from their body. This is why ladies quickly react when a bag is snatched away from them. As part of a woman’s fashion accessories, and as the fashion trend is going wild, our bags are meant to help us (women) put our things in order; to help us look more elegant and classy in the fashion world.

Why the African Walnut is Good for You

It hasn’t been too long ago that I discovered the ‘’walnuts’’ and learnt how to eat them. Well, I must say it is a wonderful nut with a funny, but nice taste. Trying to learn more about this great food, I discovered how healthy it is and then I realised I was missing something great all along. This nut has a lot of great health benefits, the African walnut especially.  The walnut has different names: African walnut, Gabon nut, Congo wood, Tiger wood and so on. The nut can be boiled or roasted before eating. According to Nairahealth.com, African walnut is an edible single seeded stone fruit botanically called Tetracarpidium conophoram and Coula edults; its plant is mostly cultivated for its nuts which can be boiled or roasted and consumed as snacks.

Walnut is good for us because it is loaded with vitamins: The nut has been found to be loaded with vitamins and contains a wide range of minerals that are needed by the human body for day to day functioning. Expert analysis of the nut found that it contains vitamins C, E, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and B12.

Omega 3 & Fatty Acid: African walnut also contains a lot of omega 3 and fatty acid, which are very vital for the body for disease prevention, blood clothing, cell growth, and boosting of immune system for prevention of infection.
A Good Hair Food: The African walnut is very high in vitamins; it contains vitamin B7 which helps to reduce hair loss or breakage. It strengthens and grows the hair, making it healthy. This goes to say that the walnut is a good food for your hair.
As a healthy Snack: Since it is high in fibre, protein and healthy unsaturated fat, walnut makes a great snack. Like all nuts, however, walnuts are high in calories, so it is advised to eat them in moderation. To best derive the health benefits of walnuts, eat them whole. Although walnuts’ skin can taste a little bitter, about 90 per cent of tannins and flavonoids in walnuts are found in the skin.

Walnuts are considered to be traditional herb in China; it is used to treat damaged kidneys, cure asthma and constipation in elderly ones.  The bark is also used in tea as laxative and chewed for toothache.

* Our greatest happiness does don't depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation and freedom in all just pursuits.

*There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will..... Epictetus.
