HOW TO BECOME A BETTER CARPENTER

HOW TO BECOME A BETTER CARPENTER

You need experimental knowledge in a world that's infatuated with intellectual knowledge. In the information age, most societies have become horrible at teaching values adding trades and tangible topics that require hands on “experiential” teaching. Even for people with advanced degrees, private companies ultimately have to teach them everything they need to know through experience. You can't learn carpentry in a book by yourself; you need to experience it with someone that has mastered it.

IF you want to go far with it, you can be self-taught to a point, but reaching mastery is a taller order. Becoming a talented carpenter is like becoming a talented athlete. If you want to be a good tennis player, you need to find other players that are well ahead of you and learn from them. Not only that, you need others that are willing to help you through good leadership. I personally define leadership as a combination  of coaching and mentoring.

Therefore, you need a carpenter mentor that can show you where to go and how to get there, and you need a carpenter coach that pushes you to be better than you believe you are. Read Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers if you want to understand the reality of what you are asking for in regard to timeline . Now comes the trickiest part, talented carpenters are an endangered species and almost extinct in most parts of the world. You will have better luck if you live in most European countries and Canada where they still value their tradesmen. Forget about it in the U.S. And for every 10 experienced carpenters you find, only 1 will be willing to help you.

A lot of carpenters prefer wood over people. Introverts seem to gravitate towards highly skilled trades and have the focused discipline to master them; this is just my opinion though. Therefore, you may have to settle for a lesser goal and aspire to be a mediocre and experimental self-thought carpenter. It’s a wonderful and fulfilling adventure either way.

Good luck!
