ALL ABOUT NNAMDI AZIKIWE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

In Abuja, the federal capital territory lies the ever busy Nnamdi Azikiwe international Airport (NAIA). The Airport was built in early 2000 and opened in 2002. It holds a pride of place amongt airports in the country. NAIA which was named after the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a foremost nationalist and one of the country’s founding fathers, is an airport that has received dignitaries and well-meaning individuals visiting the FCT for both business or leisure.

The airport boasts of two run ways, one for international flights and the other domestic both of which share a single run way. However, plans were made for the construction of a second runway but was revoked due to high cost of construction.

On January 4,2017, the Nigeria's Federal Executive Council backed the Ministry of Aviation's decision to close the airport for six weeks to enable repairs on the runway, which was said to be dysfunctional. The airport was again re-opened on April 18th, 2017 for normal activities.
