An ovarian cyst is a
fluid-filled sac that develops on one of the ovaries. It is known as a silent
killer. Like every other form of cancer, it does not show any early signs of
manifestation until it becomes too late to treat or control. It is one of the biggest forms of killer
cancer. In most cases, ovarian cysts are painless and the symptoms are hard to
show, even if it shows signs, they are vague and non specific. Ovarian cysts
can be developed in women whose ovaries contain a large number of small cysts.
As the cyst grows, more symptoms are likely to appear. It can cause the ovaries
to enlarge and can even cause infertility if left untreated.
Symptoms of ovarian cancer
can often mimic the symptoms of an ovarian cyst; routine gynecologic exams can
detect ovarian cysts early, so always make an appointment with your doctor any
time you experience changes in your menstrual cycle, pelvic pain and
unexplained weight loss.
The following are some of
the signs you should watch out for when it has to do with ovarian cyst.
Pelvic Pain: Pain in the pelvic area or the lower back area may
give a strong indication of something missing. Though usually, the pain can be
due to sitting in one position in the office or at home or getting injured
while playing sport. If the pain persists and gets intense with time, it may be
something else. It may also be a sign of a cyst in the stomach or the ovaries.
The doctor may be able to give a better diagnosis after a thorough medical check.
The cyst may be benign and would not turn into cancer. But if the cyst turns
out to be cancerous, the doctor may be able to help in a better way and suggest
treatment options.
Stomach Bloating: Bloating of stomach may happen due to
many reasons. It may be due to retention of water by the stomach, indigestion
of food or a chronic digestion problem as well. Lactose intolerance also causes
the stomach to break lactose. If the bloating of the stomach remains for more
than three weeks even after trying the usual remedies for all possible causes,
you should take further tests or scan to make sure that it is not a case of
ovarian cysts bloating the stomach, because a malignant ovarian cyst may be a
sign of ovarian cancer.
Incessant Peeing: Another possible sign of ovarian cyst
may be the constant feeling of urination or having to pee numerous times in a
day. Also feeling pain or having to apply pressure to force the urine out,
maybe signs of ovarian cancer. If you feel strong urge to urinate, then also it
may be a sign of ovarian cancer. You should visit a doctor to get a urinalysis
to get to the root cause of the problem.
Weakness and Fatigue: Fatigue is often seen as a sign of
tiredness and ignored most of the times. Most of the times some rest and good
night’s sleep fixed the problem easily and you don’t feel fatigue much. But if
you constantly find yourself wailing out of the bed to go to work and find
yourself tired even when you have not done much of work during the day, it may
be fatigue that is related to cyst. A visit to a doctor will clear all the
doubts.
Painful and Abnormal Menstruation: If you find yourself
having a little more than normal amount of bleeding during periods and if you
are experiencing extreme pain during the periods, it may be a sign to worry. If
you have undergone menopause, any kind of bleeding from the vagina area is a
cause of concern; and it is better to see your doctor if you are experiencing
heavy bleeding during periods. Bleeding in between periods or even bleeding
during sexual intercourse may also be cause for concern. As a women between the
age of 13 to 45 years, if you notice any of the signs mentioned above or any
abnormal sign that has to do with your menstrual cycle, do not wait until it
gets worse, go and see the doctor for medical checkup and advise.
