A 42-year-old man identified as Chinedu Ikegwuonu has allegedly killed his 67-year-old mother over a land belonging to his younger brother.
Ikegwuonu was said to have slit the throat of his mother, Madam Bene Ikegwuonu, at her residence in Okpunoeze, Uraugu-Nnewi community, Anambra State
It was gathered that the deceased had returned from the market and while grinding the Ogbono seed she had bought from the market, her son approached from behind and slit her throat.
The suspect, according to sources, allegedly took to his heels after committing the act leaving behind his wife and son.
A family member who pleaded for anonymity said the suspect who returned to Nnewi due to business failure in Aba, Abia state has been having a running battle with his mother over his attempt to take over a piece of land belonging to his younger brother.
The family member said the deceased tried to improve the lot of the suspect to the point of giving him money to raise the foundation of his building from the money she got after the burial of her husband.
The suspect’s wife and son were said to have been arrested by men and officers of Nnewi Central Police Station with the hope that the suspect would come for them.
The spokesman of the police in the state, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect macheted the deceased on her neck and throat before fleeing with the machete.
Mohammed, in a statement, said the deceased was later rushed to Akwudo hospital where she was confirmed dead.
