Doctor, Nurse Arrested As Patient Allegedly Dies After Abortion

The Ogun Police Command says it has arrested one Dr. Olawale Raji and a nurse, Funmilayo Olusegun, for allegedly carrying out an abortion that led to the death of one Aminat Atisola.

The suspects were reported to have been arrested on Thursday, 26th July, 2018.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said their arrest followed a complaint from Bose Kazeem, a resident of Atan, Ota, who is the sister of the deceased.

He said Aminat was two months’ pregnant and had contracted the service of the two suspects who worked in a private hospital for the abortion.

Oyeyemi said that the suspects carried out the illegal abortion in the house of the victim.

He disclosed that trouble started when Aminat developed complications shortly after the abortion was carried out, and that she died as she was being rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

Oyeyemi said when the Divisional Police Officer, Onipanu Divisional headquarters of the command at Ota, Sangobiyi Johnson, got the report, he led his team of detectives to the scene where the two medical practitioners were promptly arrested.

He said Aminat’s remains have been deposited in the mortuary of the State General Hospital, Ota, for post mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the suspects be transferred to homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abeokuta, for proper investigation and prosecution.

He warned that “abortion remains illegal and whoever is caught engaging in it without any medical justification will have the law of the land to contend with.”
