Female Student Allegedly Molested By Uni Professor Speaks Out

The embattled lecturer at the centre of the sexual allegation is Olusegun Awonusi, a Professor of English Studies in the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, and former Vice-chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun state. The female student, whose identity is yet to be revealed, claims to have nude pictures of the alleged randy professor. She said she has been suffering sexual molestations from the lecturer for months. Her words, as reported by Linda Ikeji’s blog:

“I have been suffering this for months now. Whenever students go to his office for anything, he always tries to touch you. I took pictures of him on one of the days I entered his office. He has made molestation a part of him. I’m even scared for my life in Unilag. That’s why I’m reaching out to you so he can be stopped.” She added: “He is a professor in the English department, Faculty of Arts. I am not his first victim. He does this all the time to students. I have completely given up when it comes to academics; he has failed me on tests before. When I talked to him concerning it, he told me I should know what to do I am an adult. I feel so dirty for even allowing such an old man touch me. But he doesn’t even care, as long as you satisfy his wants. I’m tired of everything. He should be stopped before he ruins the lives of other innocent girls in that English department. When he touches me, I am always in tears but it doesn’t stop him. Please, his is why I am reaching out. All I want is for him to be stopped. He is destroying the mental state of girls in Unilag. “I just want him stopped. I reached out because I don’t want him to continue molesting girls. The English department is like a cult. The lecturers have information amongst themselves. They talk about the girls they have slept with and the ones they plan to sleep with. It has been going on for years.” Meanwhile, the management of the University of Lagos has vowed to thoroughly investigate the sexual harassment allegation. Unilag authorities in a release on Wednesday, May 30, from the Communication Unit, Corporate Affairs Directorate, urged its stakeholders to remain calm, adding that the truth of the matter would be uncovered in due time. It said:

“The attention of the University Management has been drawn to a news report trending on social media in respect of an alleged sexual harassment involving an alleged lecture in the University of Lagos. “The management has a zero tolerance for allegations pertaining to sexual impropriety and has a well-established policy against such practices. “We wish to reassure all our stakeholders; students, parents, members of staff and the general public that management will not treat this matter with levity. “Management will tackle the allegation with every sense of responsibility and seriousness that the matter deserves. The issue would be thoroughly investigated with transparency. “Management respectfully solicits information from members of the University community and pledges confidentiality and protection.”

President Buhari Signs 'Not Too Young To Run' Bill
President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the 'Not Too Young To Run' bill into law. The president signed the bill on Thursday inside the Council Chamber of State House, Presidential Villa, in the presence of selected invited youths from across the county. President Buhari had, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the ‘Not too Young to Run' Bill will be signed into law in a few days’ time. However, in a brief remark after he signed the bill, President Buhari told his audience comprising representatives of young persons from the 36 states and Abuja that “You can aspire for President but please postpone your campaign till after the 2019 election.” President Buhari disclosed in his Democracy Day speech which aired on Tuesday that “In a few days to come, I will be joined by many promising young Nigerians to sign into law, the 'Not Too Young to Run' Bill". The new law is aimed at relaxing some of the stringent and discriminatory provisions of the constitution.
The bill was passed by the National Assembly last year to alter Sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the constitution. It reduced the age qualification for president from 40 to 30; for governor from 35 to 30; for senator from 35 to 30; for membership age limit for the House of Representatives from 30 to 25 and for State House of Assembly membership from 30 to 25.The president however said in the bill presented to him for assent that there was no reduction in the age requirement for the office of senators and governors, indicating that the age was still left at 35years, expressing hope that it would be looked into eventually. Lawmakers also approved independent candidature in the new law. It was part of a wider constitutional amendment process which the National Assembly carried out last year. Since its passage in July, 2017 by the National Assembly, about 25 states, representing more than two-thirds of the country’s 36 states had adopted the bill as at March ending.

It was the outcome of relentless efforts by a coalition of more than 40 youth-based initiatives across the country.
